The Cartier Santos 100 in steel ADLC (Amorphous Diamond Like Carbon) coated case is for lack of better words, simply a very cool watch. THe success of the 100 series is down to it’s masculinity; it is an oversized, uncomplicated brute of a watch. The history of the Santos 100 is simple enough, delivered to celebrate the centenary of the Santos collection in 2004, the model was designed in line with the trend for over sized watches but retained the basic elements of the Santos collection with the distinctive bezel and very legible Roman Numeral dial flourished with Cartier’s unique secret signature.
The ADLC version was released a few years later as black cases became the trend. A popular model, it was discontinued as is the way with Cartier to ensure there is space for new designs without convoluting the collection. 2016 sees a one shot ADLC Santos 100 to whet the appetite of those who missed the original! An ADLC Ballon Bleu model has also been released but the Santos 100 clearly steals the show!
Surprisingly, the watch carries a diameter of only 41.3mm but is over a centimetre in depth, which provides the majority of the bulk yet the blackened case does make it still look smaller than it is. A flat black dial with applied silvered numerals offers a nice and legible contrast while the seconds hands is a vivid red adding a splash of colour. Cartier have not over designed the dial here, which is nice to see but perhaps the slate grey numerals may have been outlined with a nice deep grey in my opinion. Nonetheless, the case and dial are both visually appealing and ergonomically sound.
Given the sporty & stealthy mood of the watch, a nice textile strap has been fitted, something I think we will see a lot of orders for from existing Santos 100 owners, the perfect Summer accompaniment! The strap carries the typical folding clasp but the visible area has also been ADLC coated. This butterfly clasp can be adjusted from both sides creating the perfect fit for most wrists as well as adding longevity to the life of the strap as there is no pulling through pin buckles.
The major difference between this version & its predecessor is the movement. The 2016 Santos 100 Carbon houses Cartier’s own 1904 MC automatic movement that carries a frequency of 28,800 vibrations an hour – approx 4Hz, which for those who appreciate such things acknowledge that this is a very high frequency for a mechanical watch. This offers the user a higher level of accuracy and also up to 48 hours of power reserve making it a great watch for those long summer days where you may change into something smarter (or more comfortable!) to take advantage of the long summer nights.
