The Ultra Thin collection from Jaeger LeCoultre has quietly become a very strong part of their collection, surprisingly outselling the Reverso for us. Despite their fantastic collection of complications, great & small, under one roof, Jaeger LeCoultre have always appeared quite conservative for me in their entry level models (the more complicated models enjoy a much more decorated visage from dials to movements; something I love about this brand!). I believe a splash of colour would have definitely enlivened an already popular collection. in 2015, the Rose Gold version of the simplest ultra thin calibre was delivered with a grey dial, a nice touch but well within the same options as their peers.
Another model of note last year was the Ultra Thin with slightly oversized date. This little functionality was missing from some of the other models and will no doubt go down very well for the more practical minded rather than the purists. For 2016, this model has had the predictable silver dial replaced with a more vintage inspired champagne dial. I think the colour leans more towards cognac than champagne but I will defer to their opinion. There is something neither here nor there on first look but this watch really comes alive once it is on the wrist.
Like all good timepieces, it works so much better once in play so to speak. The dial colour really comes to life in natural light while the dimensions and especially the slightly bevelled glass make it incredibly photogenic at virtually any angle. Powered by the studiously named in-house calibre 899/1, the movement is so thin that the entire case has a depth of just 7.45mm…think about that for a second, that is just over half a centimetre in thickness, quite astounding.
As usual, the 40mm steel case is highly polished with a nice sapphire glass pane should you wish to view the movement. Coupled with a sumptuous brown alligator strap that particularly matches the brown of the dial. A little point to note is that the classic Jaeger LeCoultre butterfly folding clasp has been updated every so slightly now carrying a raised version of their logo on the receiving end as opposed to the previously engraved version. A simple upgrade but a very nice touch in my opinion given how many clasps are now almost too ornate.
Overall, be it the silver dial or this version; both a very wearable every day watches that would work well with suits or even dress down. The appeal of this particular dial lies in the recent spotlight on the vintage market with a definite demand on quality vintage product. However, for those who would prefer the appeal of the older models but without the hassle of defining providence or durability, something like this would be perfect. Retailing at £5,800.00 (model ref: Q1288430), it is now in stock with us.
