Leading the Space Race with Omega’s latest Grey Side of the Moon

Omega’s Speedmaster collection has always held great affection and fascination for fans of watches, modern or vintage. Perhaps, watch lovers have a natural empathy towards the mystery of the universe as it mirrors the mini marvels created in the world of horology…often mystical in their application. The further association with the now legendary classic Speedy being not only the first watch into space but also the first watch on the moon creates the basis for an untold amount of special editions if handled properly.

In recent years, it appears as if Omega have regained the reins on this collection and delivered some outstanding and much sought after pieces, most notably last year’s ridiculously rare Snoopy edition. This year the updated moonphase model has been the star of the show but the latest Grey Side of the Moon model really caught our attention.

After the success of the all black ceramic Dark Side of the Moon model, the grey ceramic version continued in the same mould with the same success. This year, the series has genuine meteorite introduced for the first time. The material is obviously synonymous with such a space inspired collection but this is the first time the entire dial is delivered in meteorite!

As one can imagine, the material is difficult to machine and apply the necessary details to make into a viable and legible dial. The grey has the weathered look as one would expect from such a substance with contours and breaks that highlight a different aspect virtually every time the light catches it. The dimensions continue in the tradition of this series with a 44.25mm Grey ceramic case and sapphire glass caseback – note, not a sapphire glass pane but a full sapphire caseback showcasing the exquisitely finished 9300 Co-Axial calibre. The grey ceramic case is the same as the original Grey Side of the Moon but the liquid metal bezel now carries Omega’s patented Sedna gold applied tachymetre scale. A substantial grey alligator strap with folding clasp finishes the watch nicely with some added security.

The current Dark Side & Grey Side models are currently in stock while this new meteorite version is due from Summer 2016 onwards and retails at £9,875.00 – (Omega ref: 311.
