Allegedly brought to light via a collector as opposed to Longines own archives, the BigEye Avigation is a gorgeous throw back to an era of watchmaking defined by military prowess.
In line with other war era mechanical chronographs, the focus was on legibility and functionality. Aesthetically, from IWC’s and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Pilot’s watches as well as the original Breguet military watches that built the foundation for the modern era Type XX, the basic detailing resembled one another.
A recent and well received trend of reviving classic design has seen Longines come up trumps. Just a little digging in their (quite substantive) crates quickly reminded the public of just how storied and important Longines’ is as a Brand. A vital part of this vintage revival is styling, for which the Avigation BigEye is a real eye catcher.
Sitting at 41mm in diameter, the steel case has a brushed solid body with a closed caseback and domed sapphire glass, which is anti-reflective coated on both sides for pure legibility. The BigEye element comes from the oversized counter at three, which highlights a three minute counter as per the original. Powered by Longines own self winding calibre based on a trusty Valjoux calibre, you can guarantee the watch will be reliable and robust.
Part of any revival enjoys a commercial element, and this is where Longines again are conscious of public sentiment. Delivering many true elements of vintage design in a very value based way will help gain new fans amongst collectors and those who simply appreciate the design alike.
