Orange is officially the most legible colour under water. For 2017, Omega introduced the “big Blue” to their Planet Ocean family. Made entirely from a single block of blue ceramic, including the caseback, crown, helium valve and clasp cover; it is simply an amazing feat of engineering. Continuing on from where the Planet Ocean Deep Black series left off, this new model is both beautiful and clever in so many ways.
Beautiful because…the above is not a stock photo but our own that highlights the scintillation polished blue ceramic dial against the orange trim on the side of the strap and rubberised element that makes up the first quarter on the bezel. The 45.5mm diameter doesn’t feel as big as it is, while the rubber strap is as comfy as they come secured by a folding clasp.
Now the clever bit. Ceramic has been used in watchmaking in a few different forms and in typically black or white colour ways. Ceramic is virtually scratch resistant but very much temperature resistant. Where Omega have set themselves apart is the ability to manipulate the material to mirror their steel cousins. The sides of the case are brushed while the beautifully angled lugs have polished elements, which catch the light and showcase the watch in all its glory.
The GMT element offers the user the ability to see two separate timezones at a glance while the watch is powered by the powerful in-house Co-Axial calibre that is now METAS certified, something unique to Omega. Water resistant to 600m, the Planet Ocean Big Blue is fit for purpose, built to be worn in the most rugged environments.
