IW380901 IWC Ingenieur Sport Chronograph

Now discontinued, the IWC Ingenieur Sport Chronograph was delivered somewhat under the radar. The Ingenieur as a model has undergone various facelifts unlike its Genta designed counterparts. Perhaps this has diluted the status the model deserves.

Recent years has seen an attempted dismantling of the monopoly over ebauche movements forcing manufacturers to create their own movements. The revamped Ingenieur line is an excellent example of Richemon’t putting forward a new proprietary movement via IWC.

This model is powered by an in-house calibre 89361 – self winding with flyback chronograph. Housed in a 44mm polished Titanium case, the stark black dial is intentionally meant to be clean and legible. The two distinctive points that set this apart from the rest of the current models are the lightening bolt seconds hand at 6 o’clock & the original (and very cool) Ingenieur logo at 3 o’clock.

The Ingenieur was originally designed by “Ingeniure’s” for engineers, for those in watchmaking who were experiencing the augmentation of timekeeping by magnetic fields. The soft iron cage as per their Pilots Watches and reminiscent of a Faraday cage protects the mechanical part from these fields ensuring good time keeping.

Today, we are bombarded by magnetic fields from your phone to your car, so weirdly enough, any ant-magnetic focused collection is actually quite relevant. Then comes design cues, which IWC, are very good at! The lightening bolt hand is a tidy detail and at 44mm, even in titanium, the watch is large but that is what IWC does!

Limited to 500 pieces worldwide, for function, this may well be the modern Ingenieur for engineers. Retailing in £8,080.00 inc VAT – this model is in stock.
