Evolve or die. Panerai has enjoyed a core fanbase for many years & part of the reason for this loyalty is Panerai watches are distinctive. Therefore, as their ‘Laboratorio di Idee’ developed proprietary alloys and new movements were created in-house…the DNA of the design was not affected, if anything, the new materials made Panerai even cooler.
As with most Brands under the Richemont umbrella, it does appear the risks on materials & complication are taken in higher complication models before the new techniques are filtered down to more serial production pieces. For example, the DMLS Titanium or Direct Metal Laser Sintering was used in the Lo Scienziato series first; an incredibly complicated but aesthetically captivating idea that is still fundamentally Panerai.
This technique essentially uses 3D printing to fuse layers together but the critical element here is the 3D printing allows complex shapes to be created without the need for difficult tooling and in turn uses less material making the final product even lighter!
So having been successfully delivered in this high complication, 2020 sees the Luminor DMLS in the best selling 44mm case. The bezel, crown and locking lever are all made from CarboTech (another Panerai proprietary material) where the darker material provides a lovely contrast to the titanium grey. The caseback is an intentionally closed blackened titanium to enhance water resistance. This watch is made for function as well as form.
A clear directive for 2020 will see all Panerai Luminor models carry sandwich dials to bring into line an absolute fixture of Panerai styling. Here a dark grey matte finish dial is underpinned by a lighter grey base inverting the colours of the case materials. The watch is powered by the trusty self winding P.9010 calibre with usual 3 day power reserve. A SportsTech textile strap compliments the design well while a black rubber strap is delivered as standard in the box.
