The 2019 IWC Portofino Moonphase

The 2019 IWC Portofino Moonphase

The new Spitfire collection and in particular the bronze variants dominated the IWC SIHH releases. Our favourite release however was quietly delivered alongside a new variant of the automatic and chronograph versions of the Portofino with blue dials and contrasting gilt hands. Given blue does appear to be runway colour of the year, these models do not disappoint in their execution.

But..the star (literally!) of the new Portofino models was the Portofino Automatic Moonphase. The Portofino family is no stranger to moonphase models, with the larger Portofino Handwound already enjoying the incorporation of this complication. However, the larger size though in line with IWC’s visual aesthetics, did not fulfil the dress watch design that this complication befits.

This new version is reduced to a 40mm diameter and retains the slimline profile of the Portofino Automatic series by eliminating the date in favour of the accurate moon phase complication that is setting a discreet pusher on the side of the case. Compared to its larger sibling, it is also automatic. A sunburst blue dial enjoys contrasting silvered hands while the moon phase apertures carries the silver and blue colours whilst fitting seamlessly into the overall symmetry of the watch.

Retailing at £5,990.00 including VAT, the blue on blue design is firmly on trend but an ivory dial with gold detailing is also available mirroring the same dial set up in the Hand Wound selection as seen below.
