The Devil Did Good

Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms & Bathyscaphe are borne of their association with the seas. In recent years, Blancpain have further expanded this association into genuine conservation projects such as their Ocean Commitment scheme. There has been an emphasis on conservation all over the world with the heightened visibilty of climate change. Moving away from the Oceans, Blancpain have added another element to their project brought to life in the Bathyscaphe Day-Date “Desert” Edition

Part of the inspiration behind the Bathyscaphe Desert Edition was Ernest H. Brooks II 1962 famous dive into Devils Pool, a geothermal pool located in Nevada’s Death Valley. This pool acts as a snapshot of a time before human action affected the climate. Brooks had also contributed to Blancpain’s Fifthy Fathoms publication as well as working on training divers on the Calypso alongside Jacques Cousteau further cementing his part in diving watch lore. Brooks monochromatic photos emphasised the effect of the change of climate on our Oceans. Taking this approach away from the oceans and on to land adds to Blancpain’s overall appraoch to conservation so it makes sense to pull Brooks’ work into the conversation.

The Bathyscaphe Desert Edition takes its design cues from this raw landscape. The sand coloured dial enjoys a sunburst effect with a day-date complication offering a useful every day features set on black discs that enhance visibility further. Powered by Blancpain’s trusty 1315 calibre offering a solid 5 days worth of power reserve and visible through the saphire caseback. Limited to 500 pieces worldwide in a 43mm brushed stainless steel case finished with a sand coloured sailcolth strap.
