The Drive of your Life!

Drive 1

The new Drive de Cartier has been delivered as the latest pillar of their men’s collection. The Tank family carries more masculine models such as the recent Tank MC but typically, we have sold the ladies versions more. The Santos 100 and Calibre de Cartier collection are specifically made for Cartier to offer models mirroring the trend for sportier watches. These appear to deviate from the classic DNA of Cartier’s watches for men but are necessary for the modern market. 2014’s Rotonde de Cartier with small complication went down particularly nicely as the well loved case style was delivered in steel at a very reasonable price point too. Perhaps the new Drive collection was birthed off the success of this concept – more refined, less sporty and distinctly Cartier.

Drive 3

Matching the Rotonde model, a Dual Time version is also offered in both steel & Rose Gold alongside a Tourbillon carrying the Geneva Seal. I wish, however, to highlight the simple and effective date model. Nicely proportioned in a 41mm polished case with elegantly curved glass and Cartier’s signature cabochon set crown, this watch sits in line with modern watch architecture, especially with the soft alligator strap closed by a brushed steel folding clasp. It is the fact that it is a Cartier that sets it apart. This is by far the best looking watch of its kind in their current collection at this price point and in turn, given the attention to detail because it is a Cartier, perhaps also the best offering amongst its peers.

Drive 2

Housing Cartier’s now settled in-house self-winding 1904 MC Calibre; the Drive de Cartier is definitely not a sports watch nor is it a two hand dress watch. The guilloche dial is quietly detailed with a practical fast change date aperture. The curvature of the case is married to a flat caseback with sapphire glass pane to view a well finished movement. You have more complicated models in steel at this price point from Brands such as Mont Blanc & Baume et Mercier but neither offer the gravitas of Cartier. Simply, the name carries weight.

The Drive de Cartier is a very welcome renaissance of neglected men’s classical design from a house that can still be regarded as a force within the fashion world. As with any watch, I would urge you to visit your local Cartier retailer and try it on. Retailing at £4,550.00 including VAT, the design, price point and absolute longevity of this style offers a watch that will defintely be worn for many years to come and probably then by generations still to come!
