IWC Watches Online

IWC 's motto ProbusScafusia stands for "good, sold craftsmanship from Schauffhausen" - arguably the clearest indication of what IWC stands for. Initially named International Watch Company, the brand was founded in 1868 by an American, Florentine Ariosto Jones who chose Schauffhausen as his base given the proximity to the Rhine Falls for hydro power – this eco driven purpose set IWC's DNA as both ahead of their time & their desire to build a long standing legacy.

The first sighting of the now legendary Pilot's Watch came in 1936 with the Special Pilot's watch offering the anti-magnetic case now synonymous with this collection. The Portugieser collection was developed in 1939 with Portuguese sailor's requesting their large pocket watches be adjusted to be worn on the wrist further concreting IWC's reputation as being ahead of their time with over sized watches now very commonplace. As many companies floundered during the struggles created by the World Wars, IWC developed the first Big Pilot edition – a model now instantly synonymous with the Brand.

1967 saw the first Aquatimer launched offering another world first with the watch water resistant to an unprecedented 20 bar! IWC has always been a pioneer in terms of materials, seen recently in various ceramic models but their first foray came in 1980 with the development of a Titanium cased chronograph. The ability to manipulate such materials was presented in 1986 with the first Zirconium Oxide case – a scratch resistant & virtually unbreakable ceramic that laid the foundation for all IWC's modern ceramic cases.

Aside from a focus on almost utilitarian robust timepieces, IWC have not shied from a serious development of complicated calibres. A perfect example of this being 1985's Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar offering a never before seen setting feature using the crown only & a 500 year preset calendar! The current Perpetual Calendars all begin with this base developed by the legendary Kurt Klaus for IWC, raising the bar further for all complicated watches. In recent years, a focus has been channeled on delivering in-house movements to even the regular chronograph models as can be seen in the limited edition St. Exupery & Portugieser Chronograph Classic & Yatch Club models.
