Famous for its impressive innovation, IWC has embedded its rich history with evolving cutting-edge design and functionality.

Renowned for a range of features, such as the Pellaton automatic winding system to the moon phase display, the brand crafts pieces that captivate the seasoned collector and the novice alike. Whether a Pilot’s watch boasting unwavering precision or a Portofino projecting sheer elegance, the IWC collections offer a fusion of form and function.

So, as official stockists of IWC timepieces, New Cavendish Jewellers stand at the forefront of their innovative features, and today, we’re proud to present some of them to you here.

IWC’s In-House Movements

IWC’s in-house movements are a testament to their commitment to innovation and craftsmanship. These movements reflect the brand’s distinctive watchmaking passion and have been introduced through models like the Perpetual Calendar 42 and the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. Over the past two decades, IWC has continuously introduced new movements, with their new calibre 69 highlighting their latest advancements. This can be seen in the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41mm, pictured right, beautifully displayed through the sapphire glass back.

Pioneering Materials

Throughout the years, IWC Schaffhausen has built a reputation around innovation and creativity, particularly in its materials use. Behind this pioneering spirit, IWC began experimenting with hardened steel, ceramic, and titanium as alternatives to traditional steel and precious metals in the 1970s. This avant-garde approach set IWC apart, helping the brand advance far ahead of other companies. An instance of this can be seen in the IWC Top Gun Chronograph 41, pictured left, which was made using black zirconium oxide ceramic, known for being extremely hard and scratch-resistant but also lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

Special Complications

IWC’s special complications combine innovative mechanics with remarkable craftsmanship. These timepieces, which feature an intricate assembly of individual mechanical parts, are renowned for their complexity. A prime example is the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42, pictured right, equipped with a perpetual calendar, a very advanced mechanism that automatically adjusts for months of different lengths and even leap years. Not only this, but this timepiece has a 4-Year Digit Display, which, for a watch, marks a first in history.

Pilot’s Watch Innovations

IWC’s pilot watches stand out due to the company’s commitment towards continual innovation, rooted in their strong historical ties with military and aviation timekeeping. Exceptionally robust and easy to read, these watches feature anti-magnetic movements and sapphire glass secured against sudden pressure drops. For instance, the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 (below, left) is equipped with a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph (below, right), a first in horology, allows the wearer to adjust both time and date merely by rotating the bezel.

Aquatimer Technological Advancements

IWC’s Aquatimer series exemplifies state-of-the-art technological advancements specifically designed for underwater exploration. Emphasising water resistance and durability, these timepieces stand out in the realm of diving watches. Take, for example, the IWC Aquatimer Automatic, pictured left. This watch, equipped with the newly manufactured calibre 32111, boasts an impressive 120-hour power reserve. Its innovative features and steadfast reliability under extreme conditions exhibit IWC’s commitment to merging high-quality aesthetics, functionality, and precision within the Aquatimer series.

SafeDrive System

The pioneering SafeDive system by IWC revolutionises diving watch design by integrating an internal rotating bezel with an externally operated one. This effectively safeguards against accidental changes to the dive time, which is crucial for diver safety. An excellent demonstration of this technology is the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Darwin, pictured right. This model is more than just a tribute to the great naturalist; it’s a robust tool watch designed for demanding underwater expeditions. Its bronze case symbolises the evolution of nautical instruments and provides a unique patina over time. The SafeDive system empowers divers to set the dive duration reliably, safeguarding their underwater journey.

Flyback Function

The flyback function is a sophisticated watch complication, traditionally essential for pilots and navigators during the 20th century. It allows the chronograph to be instantly reset and restarted with a single push of the button. The utility and historical significance of this function has resulted in its inclusion in many modern timepieces. A prominent example from IWC is the IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph, pictured left. Equipped with the flyback function, it allows immediate synchronisation of the chronograph hands, making it an excellent tool for time measurement during flights.
